FOOTBALL: Ports edge out Stute

PORTSTEWART recorded a sweet victory over Institute on Saturday.

The Craig Memorial North West Junior Cup game was played at a windy Drumahoe, but despite home advantage, the senior side couldn't handle Portstewart, who won 2-0 thanks to two goals from Bryan Tosh.

Portstewart manager, Gary Taylor, told Times Sport: "I am really pleased, not just because of the result, but because of our performance on the day.

"We've been having a few problems finishing, but we worked on things during training, and they seemed to have paid off."

Gary praised both Robert Nicholl and Bryan Tosh for their performances.

"Robert's delivery in the free kicks and corners couldn't have been better, and Bryan took his goals really well.

"Chris McNeill made his debut for us on Saturday.

"He's a Coleraine lad, who played for Portrush last year. He has been impressing in the Reserves, and we brought him along on Saturday. He's another good young prospect."

Portstewart entertain PSNI this Saturday in the league and Taylor is expecting a tough test "They are always a good side.

"They will be hard to beat, they are physical side, but if we get the ball down and play like we did on Saturday, we will do well."

Taylor described Saturday's win over Championship One side Institute as 'no snatch and grab'.

He said: "We performed well, they aren't a bad side, most of them played in the Premier League last year, so we have to take credit for the win."

"It's just sod's law, Cahir has been really good for us.

"He caused a lot of problems on Saturday, but he was only with us on loan, so we have to respect that."
