A mixed weekend for Wee Whites

It was an early start for Lisburn Distillery’s U10s on Saturday morning and it seemed to have an effect on the boys as they put in a below-par performance.

Their opponents, Aquinas, were quickly out of the blocks and after creating numerous chances eventually took the lead with a great finish from their impressive number seven.

The Wee Whites started to get a foothold in the game with Jake Donaghy pushing the boys forward from midfield and they pulled a goal back when Ross White showed great skill to deftly turn in Calum Ashby’s long range shot.

Just as the period was drawing to a close Ross again got himself into a good position and was inches away from making the necessary contact that would have brought the ball under control and created another goalscoring opportunity.

Spencer Maxwell needed to be at his defensive best to keep the South Belfast boys at bay but they did eventually get a deserved goal, great build up play saw the striker get a chance which he took with aplomb although the whites might feel a little unlucky as they had a defender lying injured at the time.

It was then onto The Hammer for the game with a very good Greenisland side. Both teams tried to keep the ball on the deck and play good football but however Greenisland’s attack was getting no change out of defensive duo Michael Rocks and Ben Gilliland.

After a period of sustained pressure Greenisland did eventually get a goal but the second period saw the Wee Whites pull a goal back when Jack Bonar made it a goal in each of his first four games finding the net at the end of a strong run.

The wide men Jonathan McCullough and Kenzie Bradley did well to relieve the pressure on the defence when Greenisland were on top with some good hold-up play and strong running.

Matthew Moore then came up with a clinical strike, finding the back of the net from distance after holding off the attention of two defenders.

Goalkeeper Xander Power made a number of fine saves but could do nothing when Greenisland finished off the scoring with a fine strike from the forward.
