Aaron is top Burns brother with a brace of goals at Windsor Park

Aaron Burns is being tipped as a potential international.

The Linfield midfielder scored twice and was named man of the match in Saturday’s 4-0 Premiership victory against Andrew’s Dungannon Swifts at Windsor Park.

Those were his sixth and seventh league goals of the season. With the midfielder in such a rich vein of form, speculation is starting that he could be set for a move to England or Scotland and that he’s also being tipped for place on the Northern Ireland squad.

He’s Linfield’s top scorer this season with nine in all competitions after a successful switch from the wing to a central midfield position.

Blues boss Warren Feeney knows all about what it takes to play professionally and for Northern Ireland. He was full of praise for 22-year-old Aaron after the weekend’s game.

Feeney said: “Burnsie is an intelligent footballer.

“He’s now got nine goals from midfield this season.

“If you are a striker and score 10 by Christmas, you’ll attract attention from clubs everywhere, so it’s a phenomenal effort for a midfielder.”

Aaron’s identical twin Andrew came off the bench for Dungannon in Saturday’s showdown and impressed when he was drafted in to bolster the Swifts’ midfield in the second half.

“He did very well and managed to stop me getting my hat-trick,” said Aaron.

But Andrew was keen to pay tribute to his goal scoring brother.

“Aaron was the best player on the pitch by a country mile,” he confessed.

“Some of the boys were saying the way he’s playing he could earn a move across the water or be called up into the Northern Ireland squad  and I wouldn’t disagree.

“He recently played for the Northern Ireland Under 21s and if he gets a call-up to the full international team he would be more than capable of holding his own.

“He’s got the pace and the strength needed to go to a higher level and he certainly wouldn’t look out of place.”

Meanwhile, Aaron said he didn’t want to comment on transfer talk saying his focus this week was on preparing for Saturday’s derby match with Belfast rivals Glentoran.

Both the Burns brothers have already played in England, signing full-time professional contracts with Premier League club Leicester City.

They decided to move back home and have set up their own business, Burns Soccer School, coaching locally and in other parts  of the province.
