Alice in wonderland as she lands dream deal in Iceland

Alice Harkness (18) transferred from Glentoran Ladies to Grindavik last month.

The goalkeeper, who also represents Northern Ireland at Under 19 level says she’s enjoying life in Iceland and is gaining plenty of experience from her team mates.

Alice, a former pupil of Coleraine High School, started her football career at East End. She then played for Bertie Peacock Youths before moving on to YMCA in Londonderry.

Through the years the teenager has impressed at County level and has represented Northern Ireland at several age groups.

Alice is also a keen volleyball player.

She has recently represented Northern Ireland at the European Senior Championships in Belgium.

Between the sticks in Iceland, Alice as played in two league games, winning the first 6-1 against Keflavik and drawing 2-2 against HÖttur.

Taking a break from a tough training schedule, Alice told Times Sport that a Northern Ireland team mate helped her make the move.

“One of the girls in the Senior Northern Ireland side asked me if I would be interested in making a move.

“Grindavik were looking for a keeper at the time. I had a think about it, and I felt that it was a good opportunity for me.

“There were some discussions between coaches in Northern Ireland and here in Iceland, and after a few days I was cleared buy the IFA and I became an official player of Grindavik FC,” explained Alice.

Alice explained that the style of football is different to that which is used to, but that she’s learning plenty from her time in Iceland:

“The style of football is completely different - it’s not as physical as I am used to, but the girls have great control and technique on the ball.”

Alice added: “The team trains four times a week.

“I have two extra goalkeeping sessions a week along with a match, so it can be pretty demanding at times.

“There are some great quality players within the team, quite a few of the older girls have experience of playing college football in the States, and some of the younger girls have really good potential, so I am really enjoying the experience,” added Alice.
