Allen, who only took over from Gary Simpson recently, felt his players deserved to book their place in the Coca/Cola Intermediate Cup fifth round.

“It was a great display from the boys,” stated Allen.

“It was another quick start from us, which we did in our last game racing into a three or four goal lead and that takes the pressure off when you get that sort of start.”

Prior to kick-off it certainly was a case of what team wanted it more and Allen knew his boys were going to give their all.

“The players always put in a effort, that’s the good thing about Newbuildings players,” he added.

“They are always hungry, they always want to play and I’m proud of them.”

The United gaffer again was pleased that Ricky Lee Dougherty continued his amazing goalscoring run but he was even more happy that Steven Wallace netted twice.

Allen has moved Wallace into a different position as a left winger to get him into positions to score more goals and it worked a treat at the weekend.

“It’s a big thing I’m try to emphasize that we need to start getting more goals from other players and that’s why I have moved Steven up so sort of left forward and he’s not really comfortable in that position but it’s goals I want out of him.

“On Saturday he chipped in with another two and he has produced a few goals but it was an excellent effort all round.

“The big thing I told the boys at half-time was a clean-sheet was our target as the game was over, but we didn’t manage to get it, but we tried out a new centre-half and few in a couple of young boys who I wanted to have a look at, so I wasn’t too disappointed by the goal we conceded.”

The win means United face either neighbours Institute or Crumlin Star in the next round and that was something which Allen used in his team-talk before the game.

“No matter who we get in the next round it’s going to be massive,” stated Allen.

“That was the carrot before the game I said to the lads. We have had a couple of battles with ’Stute this season in the Craig Memorial and North West Senior Cup and Crumlin Star came here and beat us in the Irish Cup and that was a sore one.

“But hopefully who ever we get we’ll put a proud performance in.”

The tie at Newbuildings was played in rain throughout, however their pitch held up well and Allen wanted to thank everyone who put in a lot of hard work.

“To be honest we had 15 or 20 people up at the pitch all working hard to get the game on, so I want to put out a massive thank you to them for getting our game on, I don’t think there was many other games on in the North West.”
