The new boss chose to take the positives from a match in which Lee Forsythe’s side held a slender 3-2 lead with 10 minutes left on the clock. But late mistakes from an understrength Island saw them ship in a further two goals as the visitors sealed all three points.

Striker Tiago Leite netted both goals for the hosts while Rangers’ scorers were Ricky Rutherford (two), Gary McDermott (two) and Ryan Newberry (penalty).

“I was pleased with our performance considering we went into the game without first-team goalkeeper Stephen Cummings. At 3-2, we were pressing for an equaliser but individual errors by stand-in ‘keeper Andrew Brown cost us when he dropped one at Rutherford’s feet and he tapped home. A few minutes later he came out for one-on-one and got sent off and gave away penalty for fifth.

“But there was a lot of positives to take from it and Lee (Forsythe) spoke highly about us after the game. It was also great to see Tiago get off the mark in the Premier Division with his first goals for the club.”
