AMATEUR LEAGUE: Mossley ease past Kilroot

AFTER going through the scales practically all season, the ubiquitous overweight singer has finally burst into song and Saturday’s 7-1 defeat - 27 in match 27 - away to Mossley FC has ensured Kilroot Rec will finish bottom of 1C and may have to take the drop back into junior football, depending on whether the 2a champions meet the grounds criteria.

It really was all so comfortable for Mossley who have now won three of their last four; their only defeat coming at the hands of leaders St Patrick’s YM. Mossley boss Campbell Graham told the Times: “It was easy enough – especially after we got the first goal. After that, it was never really in doubt, even with us having to play the last 20 minutes or so with only 10 men. Lee Graham had to go off, with our only substitute Trevor Young already on, for the injured Trevor Young.”

Kilroot were missing one of their three ex-Larne Olympians, Paul Braden and leading goalscorer Stephen Bittles, both sent off at Bangor Swifts the week before, but manager Terry Thomas maintained: “The team we had out there still should have been more competitive. And we had the likes of Norman Kernaghan back, but we were authors of our own disaster. It’s hard to think of a goal that couldn’t have been prevented. So many of our boys all had disappointing displays.”

It was all distinctly low-key until Mossley’s Gary Orr glanced home a Gary Orr free-kick for the opener. James McKinney soon widened the margin, scoring at the second attempt after his initial shot had been pawed out by keeper Gordon Priestly. The third came just before the break, with Graham making his mark.

Just two minutes after the interval, it was four as Orr netted from the spot before Chris Proctor headed in number five. Orr duly grabbed his first hat-trick of the season to make it six.

There was some brief consolation for Kilroot when Jonny McFetridge pounced onto the loose ball, after Raymond Hammond’s effort had pinged off a post.

It was Orr, however, who had the last word with his fourth of the afternoon, racing through to loft the ball over Priestly.

On Saturday, Mossley travel to Newtownards to meet the side mostly likely to claim the second promotion slot, 1st Bangor Old Boys, while for Kilroot Rec, there’s an East Antrim derby against Newington Rangers at The Cliff.
