The forward, who played for Linfield, Glenavon, Donegal Celtic, Glentoran, Coleraine and Carrick, is now joint boss of 18th Newtownabbey alongside Phil McMahon.

And it was their side who came away 4-2 victors over the Amateurs at the weekend in Division 1C of the Amateur League.

The game started with both teams looking nervous and not wanting to be on the losing end.

18th were piling the pressure on early doors and Dromore were riding their luck after a series of corners either hit the cross bar or were cleared off the line by R.Walker.

Dromore weathered the early pressure and were looking to hit 18th on the break with the pace of S.Haslem and M.Rowan.

As the half ended, Dromore had a penalty claim turned down and M.Rowan shot over the bar when only the goalkeeper to beat.

The half time whistle went and the players were told to keep it tight and that they would get chances.

The second half started again with 18th putting pressure on the Dromore back line but they were getting little change from the Dromore defence.

On 60 minutes came the breakthrough when, after a series of corners, the 18th striker volleyed in at the back post after slack marking by Dromore.

The next five minutes saw Dromore concede another two goals again after some poor defending.

Dromore made two substitutions bringing on D.Maguire and W.McCutchen for their first team debuts.

These changes livened up Dromore and on 70 minutes W.McMurray hit a belter from 35 yards into the net with the goalkeeper nowhere near it.

Dromore started to push for another goal but were hit on the break by another 18th goal.

With 10 minutes remaining, Dromore got their second goal when good work from D.Maguire, G.Flecther and J.Beattie put M.Rowan through one on one with the goalkeeper and this time he need no mistake.

Afterwards, manager Brownlee commented: “Today’s game was always going to be hard against a team under former Irish League player Mark Miskimmin’s management.

“The players battled hard and I was pleased with the new signings G.Flecther and R.Walkers performances. The two subs D.Maguire and W.McCutchen are both under 19 and it was good for them both to get a round out.”

Next week the 1st team travel to play Dunmurry YM with a 2pm ko.”
