Austin powers home to earn Portstewart a draw at Queen’s

Danny Austin was the man of the moment for Portstewart on Saturday when he hit home to earn Gary Taylor’s side a point at Dub Lane.

The point adds to Portstewarts good start to Championship Two and keeps their unbeaten run going.

They travel to Moyola Park tonight (Tuesday) in the North West Senior Cup, however they have no fixture this Saturday.

Taylor was pleased with the display against Queen’s, who he described as a ‘good footballing side’.

“To be fair I think a draw was a fair result. We were poor enough in the first half, but we had a good second half.”

Chances from Adam Campbell and Ryan Doherty were saved by the Queen’s keeper early in the game. Five minutes before the break, Queen’s got a break through from a deflected shot.

A determined Portstewart emerged for the second half and Austin scored from close range eight minutes into the second spell. After that Forgrave and Dunlop both had efforts saved, at the other end Maddison pulled off a fine save in the dying minutes to keep the score at 1-1.

Taylor paid tribute to the goal scorer, Austin: “Danny came in and did very well. He had a good chance before he finally got his goal. Queen’s are a half decent side, so I’m happy that we got a point from the tie.

On Saturday, midfielder Ryan Doherty was presented with the Player of the Month Award. Taylor praised the young player on a well-deserved award: “Ryan is another of our new signings who has really impressed me.

“He’s got a good attitude and can play on the left or on the right, he has been superb so far this season.”
