Ballymena & Provincial League: Second half power show takes Carniny through in cup

CARNINY Amateurs produced a stirring second half performance to avert the threat of a shock in Saturday’s Crawford Cup action.

Anthony McCartney’s side were being held 2-2 at the interval by Castle Star, from two divisions below them, before finally sparking into life with six second half goals.

In the Michelin Athletic Club-sponsored league championship, Raceview suffered a fifth defeat in eight league games when they went down at Brantwood.

But there was better news for Clough Rangers Athletic, who took a point from their visit to Dunloy.

Ricky Nicholl’s sode will be aiming for their first league win of the campaign this Saturday when Raceview are the visitors to Tobar Park.

INTERMEDIATE LEAGUE

Brantwood 4, Raceview 2: Brantwood started off well taking the lead after Patrick Kelly scored on the 11th minute.

Things got better for Brantwood after central defender Wayne Porter scored on the 26th minute then with half-time approaching Patrick Kelly scored his second goal on the 35th minute giving Brantwood a three goal cushion at half-time.

Raceview got back into the game on the 46th minute when Bobby Hanna scored but then conceded a fourth goal when Fintan McCartney scored on the 53rd minute.

Raceview got a second goal after Brantwood conceded an own goal on the 59th minute this being the final goal in the game.

Dunloy 3, Clough Rangers Athletic 3: After a good start by both teams Dunloy took the lead when Owen McAlynn scored on the 10th minute then added to this when Jamie McFerran scored on the 31st minute giving them a two goal lead at half-time.

Clough got back into the game after Johnston Logan scored on the 51st minute but then conceded a penalty which Benny McGarry converted on the 54th minute.

Clough never gave up the chase getting a second goal when David Nicholl scored on the 80th minute and back on level terms after David Nicholl scored his second goal on the 88th minute giving the teams a point each at the final whistle.

Carniny Amateurs 8, Castle Star 2: Castle from Junior Division Two gave a very good account of themselves particularly in the first- half when they held Carniny but ran out of steam a bit during the final half-hour when Carniny scored five goals.

Carniny went in front after Dean Magill scored on the 10th minute then Castle came back to equalise with Andy Hall scoring on the 17th minute.

Kieran McGarry put Carniny back in front on the 26th minute but back came the Castle with a second equaliser scored by Joe Lough on the 34th minute and minute s later Castle were down to ten men having a man sent off.

Half-time saw the teams still level but with the extra man Carniny went on to score six more goals by Ryan Wilkinson 51st, 61st and 67th minutes and David Hanna on the 53rd, 80th and 82nd minutes.

FC Larne 2, Carniny Amateurs II 2: All the goals in this game were scored during the first-half but it was a surprise none were scored during the second as there were lots of chances for both teams.

Larne took the lead on the 10th minute after Steve White scored but then saw Lloyd White score with a first time 25 yard shot on the 25th minute.

Larne went in front again when Andy Smith scored but back came Carniny with Mark Robinson scoring the equaliser on the 40th minute then the second half then came but alas no more goals.
