The Scot became one of the most iconic figures in the Showgrounds club’s history passed away at the weekend.

Eric was with the club between 1948 and 1962, winning a number of trophies including the famous Irish Cup success in 1958.

He also held the joint record for the most number of appearances for United, pulling on the sky blue shirt on an incredible 559 occasions.

Warm tributes were paid to Eric at the Showgrounds on Saturday as news filtered through of his death, with a minute’s applause at the pre-match lunch followed by a minute’s silence prior to Ballymena’s match against Crusaders.

“He was an integral part of that famous Ballymena team of 1958, the names of which still roll off the tongue today,” said Jackie Fullerton, who compered the lunch function.

Eric’s love affair with Ballymena began when he was a part-time professonal with Parkhead Juniors in the Glasgow Central League, where one of the club’s committee members was a brother of then Ballymena manager Bob McKay.

He took up residence in Ballymena and obtained employment with Ballymena Construction Company, where he helped to build the town’s Chichester Park estate.

On the pitch, he was an accomplished defender who regularly represented the Irish League in inter-league fixtures and was named Ulster Footballer of the Year in 1952.

He was part of the team which gave Ballymena their first Irish Cup win in 1958 and his name was known among even the youngest generations of Ballymena fans.

Eric’s funeral service takes place today (Tueaday) at 11am at S Clarke & Son Funeral Church, Newtownards, with interment afterwards at Clandeboye cemetery.
