Ballynure still in with a chance of silverware

ALTHOUGH Ballynure OB are out of the running for the league championship, they are still in with two chances of having silverware on show at their annual end-of-season dinner.

Gary Burns’ lads have reached the quarter-final of the Crawford Cup and the semi-final of the O’Gorman Cup, but club officials and players are eagerly awaiting news about who their opponents will be.

With only four fixtures to fulfil to complete their Ballymena Premier League programme a podium finish seems to be rather too much to hope for.

Sitting in sixth place leaves them in the bottom half of the table, while at the top it is realistically a three horse race for the title, with undefeated long time leaders, Newtowne, still favourites with Brantwood and Desertmartin their main challengers.

Commenting club president, Michael Graham, said, “Inconsistency has been our main problem, but we have improved since Christmas and are still in two cups, so the lads have a lot to play for in the run-in.

“We would have been expected to pick up points at home on Saturday against Clough Rangers Athletic, so we were very disappointed when it was postponed because of the rearranged Northern Ireland international fixture.

“As regards the cups all we can hope for is to receive home draws, but there will be no easy matches at this stage.”
