Bates blasts Blues into last eight

Guy Bates blasted Glenavon into the last eight of the Irish Cup after his hat-trick secured a 3-0 win over Ballinamallard at Ferney Park on Saturday.

Gary Hamilton’s side will now face Glentoran at The Oval with the winner facing Crusaders in the semi-final.

Bates opened his and Glenavon’s account after just 10 minutes when he headed home a teasing cross from Andy McGrory.

Glenavon held on to their lead by the break and things got even better after the restart with Bates doubling the lead on 64 minutes, again set up by the lively McGrory.

Then in the 90th minute Bates got his third from the penalty spot after he had been brought down in the box.
