Blast from the past: Larne win Steel Cup in ‘56
Francey Hughes is pictured receiving the Steel and Sons Cup trophy from a County Antrim Football Association official after Larne defeated Linfield Swifts 3-1 in the 1956-57 final.
The photo was kindly submitted to the Larne Times by Ballymena man Jackie Hughes who played for the Invermen between 1956 and 1958. He was part of the treble-winning side which claimed the Steel Cup, ‘B’ Division and Louis Moore Cup and went on to sign for Glenavon.
In a brief letter which accompanied the image, he said he thoroughly enjoyed his time at Larne and has fond memories of the camaraderie among the players.
