The centre-back, who left the Brandywell club by mutual consent this week, was rumoured to be on Warren Feeney’s wanted list.

However the Blues gaffer admitted he’s doesn’t want Byrne and a striker is his number one priority.

“I made a phone call to Peter Hutton about a few things and Cliff’s name was mentioned,” stated Feeney.

“I’ve played against Cliff many time in England and know all about him but at that stage before the transfer window shut, I just wanted to keep all my options open and I had to look at all possibilities.

“I know Cliff also had a medial ligament injury so it wasn’t really going to be an option.

“I did speak to Peter about strikers, too, because that was my main priority then and remains so now.

“He wasn’t in a position to help with a striker and I never followed up the call with any conversation about Cliff or any other player.”
