Boss happy with win

INSTITUTE manager Paul Kee was thrilled that his side picked up their first victory of the season over Tobermore United, on Friday night.

The Drumahoe man was full of praise for his men’s never say die attitude and he felt they fully deserved the victory.

“It was about character and rolling up the sleeves, we were 2-0 up in the last game and you sort of get to a point there where you’re worrying wondering if they’ll come back into it,” he admitted.

“But that’s another good step forward in terms of resilience at home. We want to win as many home games as possible.

“The most important thing is that we got the three points. We got a third goal which was a mistake by their ’keeper but Sean McCarron, in fairness to him, was going really well in pre-season but missed last week through sickness, has come back tonight, come on and scored and I think he’ll score goals in this league. He’s a good player and a good young player.

“We’re trying to improve our ability to play with composure in tight areas and trying to get them to be expressive and clever and intricate in their play and we’re going to keep on doing it.

“We push the wing backs on and, in fairness, they’ve got a good appetite to play. I think our defensive play was a lot better tonight though. We defended with a lot of resilience, we were quite solid, and I was quite pleased with midfield.”

Kee also felt that his squad played their part in securing the three points and wasn’t surprised when United striker Neil Lamont scored in the closing stages of the game, with the one and only real shot he had all night.

“We had a good bench on Friday night, we had Neil Harkin as well as Sean McCarron - Neil’s a quality player - so there’s good competition for places now and hopefully the players will accept that and get on with it and fight for their spots.

“Before the match, people would’ve expected us to win but we had tough games with Tobermore three times last year. That was probably the easiest match we’ve had against them out of four outings. Whilst they scored two, the penalty was a bit disappointing and the second I just have to give credit to young Neil Lamont.

“He’s had one shot and he’s scored. I tried to sign him at the start of the season to be honest with you but he didn’t want to move here, he’s a quality player, he scored a good goal, but we were just caught with our trousers down. But we held out well and I don’t think Alan Ryan had that much to do.”
