‘Bring in quality, or risk losing me’

Larne’s star striker Paul Maguire has called on the club to bring in a string of quality players in the summer, or risk losing his services to another club.

Maguire, who despite a four-month injury lay-off, finished as Larne’s top scorer this season, told the Times: “I have to wait and see who the manager brings in as we need six or seven quality players to make me even consider signing again,” he said.

“There is honestly nothing more I want to do than challenge at the top of the league with Larne, but if I have to move out of the town to do it then it may have to happen.

“It is not about money but success, I want to win every game and be at the top of the table rather than struggling to stay in this division. In the past Larne have finished eighth with 34 points and this season we finished in the same spot with 24 points.”

Confirming he has spoken to boss Graham McConnell, Maguire said he needed to think about his own ambitions as a player. “I have told the manager we don’t have enough quality, but if he brings those players in I have given him my word that I will sign,” he said.

“To be honest, I am 29 and still want to achieve things in football. I have had a couple of calls from other clubs which I have to consider. It is now with the powers that be at Inver Park, as I want to stay. In some ways I have to be selfish as I have spent a long time pleasing others and now I have to think about myself.”

Maguire is currently involved with the NI Regions’ squad who are set to play in Italy in June.
