Burns bids farewell to Carrick as he heads to Australia

Two of his best players have exited in the last few days, but Gary Haveron has said he would like to try and get at least one more player signed before the transfer window shuts on Friday.

With goalkeeper Gareth Deane already recalled by Linfield, midfielder Ryan Burns bade farewell to his Taylor’s Avenue playing and management colleagues on Tuesday night ahead of his departure for what he hopes will be a new life in Melbourne.

“Ryan has decided to go to Australia with his former Portadown team-mate Kevin Braniff and, while we are sad to lose him, we all wish him well for the future. He’s a terrific talent and one of the best trainers I have ever seen and I believe he deserves to be playing fulltime football,” said manager Haveron.

“Naturally, we cannot stand in the way of someone who wants to keep improving his football and his life and is prepared to take such a risk in doing so, upping sticks and moving to the other side of the world.

“While he hadn’t featured in the last two matches, he had a good run of six or seven outings in the team before that and he has always done well for Carrick Rangers.

“He can play left or right side of midfield or off the strikers and he is a very skilful player who was very much part of our plans.”

Meanwhile, Carrick defeated Larne Tech Old Boys 4-0 in a friendly at The Cliff on Tuesday night.
