Cairns draws comfort

Glebe Rangers boss Peter Cairns was pleased with his side’s defensive performance after cancelling out Institute on Saturday.

Rangers battled their way to 0-0 draw at the Riada Stadium and Cairns was pleased after watching his side secure a clean sheet.

One of the first aims of his managerial reign was to tighten up Glebe’s rearguard as they strive to secure survival in the Championship One.

However that bid was hampered at the weekend as the teams placed above Rangers secured positive results and stretched their distance from the drop zone. Cairns said: “I’m happy to keep the clean sheet. It wasn’t the best of match ever but we kind of tried to keep the game at 0-0 for as long as possible.

“We did that and got two good chances with 10 minutes to go but did not take them.

“I’m pleased with the clean sheet. When I spoke at the start of my reign that was the main goal - to stop leaking goals. We’ve been away to Newry and Dergview and conceded late on, and then on Saturday that’s our first clean sheet.

“It’s a big achievement but the lads have put the work in. It’s about getting the balance between keeping the other team out and we now need to nick a goal at the other end because we need to get points.”

Glebe lie in second place in the Championship One and will look to secure victory away to Bangor on St Patrick’s Day.
