INSTITUTE’S assistant manager Paul Carlyle like many associated with the club was fuming following their defeat at Newry City, on Saturday.

Carlyle was bitterly disappointed that the squad didn’t seem to have that fight and determination, which you need to win any game of football.

“There was more intensity about Newry, they had the better fight and desire, they were first to the ball and that was disappointing,” admitted Carlyle.

“Some of our players at times feel that we have to get this nice expansive slow football game going and when it doesn’t happen then they’ll wait for it to happen and that isn’t the case in the Championship.”

Carlyle was very critical of the entire team and felt all three goals at the weekend came after mistakes.

“In fairness their first goal came about after a lack of communications, players not making the right decision and the ball has broken to them and they have scored.

“Now lets face it the three goals you could look at all of them and examine them for silly mistakes and without assassinating anybodies characters, we have already told them privately who we feel is responsible, but I’m not to sure if the players agree with us.

“The first couple of goals have come down the inside left centre-half channel, so you don’t need to be a rocket science to figure what the problem was there, the third goal came from a corner and in my opinion Alan Ryan should have come and took everything as one of the smallest players on the pitch gets a header in from a few yards out.”

Carlyle also congratulated Newry as they ran out deserved winners, but was annoyed that the players weren’t up for the challenge.

“I have to take my hat off to them because they were better than us on Saturday. They are a more determined team and they have more about them in terms of character and that’s really disappointing, but it’s a reality check and I’m not going to lie about it.

“It’s not acceptable and even at this stage of the season this was our first test and we have failed, in fairness to Newry they deserved it.

“Newry lost to Carrick in their previous match, but they showed what a good team does and they bounced back in their next league game and got the win.

“Where they are at as a team and the personality and character that they have got, we need that at Institute and we need more effort from the players, now myself and the rest of the coaching staff can ask for it and demand it, but the players have to meet us half-way.

“I think the character of the team has to develop further, it’s something that we have been trying to work on this year, but we have too many players who don’t invest enough time in certain aspects of their fitness and the team ethics thing.”
