Carniny sides ‘rain’ supreme with clean sweep of wins

The wet weather certainly didn’t dampen Carniny Youth team’s spirits last weekend when all five of their teams in action recorded wins against their respective opponents.

The Under 15s were first in action on the Friday night in a remarkable game where they came back from two down to score six goals in the last 20 mins of the game to take a convincing win in the end.

The Under 16s enjoyed a pleasing 4-1 derby win over Ballymena Utd U16s.

The Under 13s were playing Northend Utd Youth in their NIBFA Cup competition, with the tie going to extra time before they ran out 6-3 winners.

The Under 14s were also in NIBFA Cup action against Carryduff Colts, again going to extra time where they netted three times to come away with a 4-1 win. The Under 12s were in National league action up in Limavady, running out 2-1 winners.

SHADOWING PROGRAMME

Ballymena Academy pupils Aaron Johnston and Louis McGuikin recently joined Carniny Amateur and Youth FC for eight weeks as part of their school’s shadowing programme.

During the 8 weeks the boys observed the 2003 coaches and participated in sessions. The club wish them all the best in their future endeavours and presented them with sports vouchers.

Carniny Youth 2, Limavady Youth 1: Carniny broke the deadlock when the ball was switched from right to left from Mearns to Anderson to Lee Lynn who took on the defender and scored low into the corner on his second attempt.

Limavady were gifted an equaliser from a free kick when an unfortunate mistake by McNicholl left the ball squirming into the net.

Just when the crowd thought it was going to end in a frustrating draw it was Craig Farquhar that came up with the winner in the last minute with a great header from a Lynn corner.

Carniny 6, Northend United 3 (aet): With ten minutes gone Northend opened the scoring after a goal mouth scrap when the ball was poked home.

Carniny began to settle and equalised through Conor Stewart who tucked the ball away into the bottom corner.

The second half began with Carniny on top, pressing hard, and Joshua Courtney received the ball between two defenders controlled and tucked the ball home.

Stewart had the ball in the net but was disallowed for offside before Northend equalised with a tidy finish.

Carniny took the lead again when Matthew Kirk whipped in a free kick which hit the post and the rebound fell to Conor Stewart who made no mistake.

Northend won a penalty right at the death. From the resulting penalty Jake Parker got a hand to it but was unable to keep it out.

Carniny got their noses in front again in extra time with Joshua Courtney grabbing his second of the game with a strike which gave the keeper no chance.

Carniny pressed for more and the tie was put to bed with Conor Stewart grabbing his hatrick with a tidy finish and then in quick succession Conor Stewart grabbed his fourth with a wonderful strike.

UNDER-14

Carniny 4, Carryduff Colts 1 (aet): In this NIBFA Cup tie, Carryduff took the lead just before half time when the ball wasn’t cleared properly at the back and was slotted in past O’Brien.

Carniny had a chance to level when James McDonnell was brought down for a penalty but Shea O’Brien’s spot kick hit the post.

With seconds to go of added on time Cory Little broke through and coolly slotted below the keeper to keep Carniny’s cup dream alive.

Carniny took the lead in extra time from a Sean Elliott free kick and another two goals from Bailie Young and Adam Foster put the tie to bed and sent Carniny through to the next round.

Carniny 6, Institute 2: The Ballymena boys fell behind on 15 minutes and it appeared it was not going to be Carniny’s night when then conceded a bizarre own goal seven minites into the second half.

Skipper Simon Evans led the comeback when he smashed home a spot kick after Rhys O’Mullan had been pushed.

With 13 minutes to go Jamie Houston was released by a lovely Kristian Ferris pass. Everyone missed the inviting cross except Jordan Hassan who volleyed home from a narrow angle at the far post.

Two minutes later Carniny took the lead when Houston ghosted into the box and dinked the ball beautifully over the keeper. With eight minutes to go the impressive O’Mullan scored with a speculative shot from long range before Andrew Adams scored from close range. The goal of the night was reserved for Kristian Ferris who guided a thirty yard rocket into the top corner in the last minute.

Carniny 4, Ballymena United 1: Carniny took the lead when a corner was met by Tyrone Balmer who headed high into the goal.

Ballymena equalised shortly after halftime when a cross come shot looped high into Owen Marquess’s goal.

Carniny regained the lead from a Matthew Shevlin free kick and Shevlin then produced a piece of superb play, when he flicked the ball over the head of a defender and fired a shot into the net.

Carniny scored a fourth when a defence splitting pass from Jamie Killough was controlled and finished by Tyrone Balmer.
