Carniny to appeal Junior Cup dismissal

CARNINY Rangers were dismissed from the Semi Final of the Coca-Cola Junior Cup by the Junior Cup Emergency Committee on Monday past as they ruled that Carniny Rangers had played an ineligible player in their quarter-final match.

Carniny had sought a ruling on the eligibility of a player who had played in previous rounds of the Junior Cup and the Junior Cup Committee ruled that this player was ineligible as per their reading of the Competition Rules.

Carniny Rangers have appealed against this decision as they feel the player was eligible per the Rules and now must wait the outcome of the Appeal to see if their Junior Cup dream continues.

The Co Antrim FA will not be making a decision on the eligibility of the player to play in the Junior Shield Semi Final until they meet in April.

BSML DIVISION ONE

All Saints OB 2, Holywell 0: Saints made it five league wins in a row with an unconvincing win over a depleted Holywell side.

The home side started bright and were camped in the Holywell half for most of the opening exchanges, but they couldn't convert their pressure into goals until 18 minutes in when Conor Crilly jinked past two Holywell defenders in their box before trying to play the ball across the box which was inadvertently deflected into the goal by a Holywell defender.

It was 2-0 on the half hour mark when Saints were gifted a second goal.

Micky McCarry played the ball down the channel for Eoin Hudson but the ball looked to be rolling safely into the keeper Keith Weise's arms but he failed to deal with it and the ball was retrieved by Eoin Hudson who squared to Gerard Spurgeon giving him the simplest of tasks of firing into the empty net from close range.

Holywell kept plugging away and should have a got a goal back before the break but Jeff Johnston effort was brilliantly saved by Brian Martin.

Saints' Gerard Spurgeon and Liam Cassley did break clear but their efforts were blocked by Holywell keeper Keith Weise and Saints main danger late on came from corner kicks which Holywell dealt with well, but the two first half goals were enough to see Saints seal all three points.

North End 1, Ballykeel 2: This game may have a big bearing on which of these teams will remain in Division One next season and Ballykeel grabbed all three points which gives them a better chance of staying in the top flight.

Ballykeel grew into the game and took the lead on 25 minutes when Jason Martin pounced on a mistake by a North End defender and crossed for Barry Bonnes to slam the ball home from 12 yards out.

Ballykeel got off to a flyer at the start of the second half as they doubled their lead 10 minutes in when Justin Rowe split the North End defence for Barry Bonnes to race onto and he won the race with keeper Sean Ward poking the ball past him before rolling into the unguarded goal.

North End worked their way back into the game and got a goal back with 10 minutes to go when they were awarded a penalty for a handball. Dean Dunlop fired in the resulting spot kick to set up a tense finish.

The home side threw everything at Ballykeel but could not break the visitors down as Robert Crawford marshalled his defence well and helped them hang on for three valuable points.

FC Penarol 1, Seven Towers 2: This was a game that Penarol should have won as they were leading 1-0 until five minutes from time when Towers produced a brilliant comeback.

Penarol started brightly playing like a team at the top end of the league rather than the wrong end of the table.

Penarol got the goal their efforts deserved minutes before half time when Graham Adams broke down the right before cutting through the Towers defence and fired into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.

On 85 minutes Towers drew level when a long throw from Darren Magee found its way to Alan Telford. He curled his shot from 15 yards into the top corner to make it 1-1.

Towers pushed for another goal with three playing up front and this resulted in a winner in the 90 minutes.

Philip Lynn found himself in the same spot as Telford minutes earlier. This time with his back to goal, Philip Lynn spun and curled his shot into the same top corner. The win keeps Towers on course for a playoff spot and leave Penarol in danger of dropping into Division Three

Shore Wanderers 2, Michelin 1: This was a important game for both sides who hope to be in a position to challenge for automatic promotion places should the top two slip up but after another hard-fought victory for Shore, they now overtake Michelin for third spot.

Both teams started well but Michelin drew first blood when Stephen Philips split the Shore defence to send Alex Chimbulei clear and he fired past Shore keeper Chris Wheatley.

This woke the home team up and they proceeded to play some of their best football of the season before making their pressure pay after 30 minutes when a Shane Ruddy free-kick found Sean Gillen unmarked at the back post where he nodded the ball down for Barry Graham to fire home.

Shore should have taken the lead straight after the re-start when Barry Graham was left one to one with the Michelin keeper Andy Johnston but he made a fine save.

Shortly afterwards Shore managed to take the lead when a Gavin Andrews cross was knocked in at the back post by Darren Craig.

In the last few minutes Michelin created two great with Alex Chimbulei hitting the post from a corner and Leroy Kennedy forcing Shore to make a goal line clearance but Shore held on to collect all three points.

Dunloy dominated the first half and went in three goals up with goals from Chris Smiley (2) and Stephen Dooey.

The second half saw no let up from Athletic who hit Demesne with two further goals from Dooey and Darren Webb to put them three points nearer to league leaders Westend Athletic.

Cullybackey Olympic improved their play-off chances with a 1-0 winner over Atletico Antrim in the only other Division Three game played.
