Carniny Youth are furnished article with new sponsor deal

CARNINY Youth welcomed another new club sponsor this week when Ballymena based furniture retail store, Algram stepped into the breach to offer the local football sponsorship in the form of training wear.

The club were presented with impressive Umbro training shirts which will carry the Algram logo and therefore will be seen all over the Province with five of Carniny Youth's teams playing in the National Youth League.

Philip Logan from the company was on hand last Saturday to present the first batch of the shirts to the club's under 13 and 14 squads who were playing their National League home matches at the Showgrounds.

It is sponsorship deals like this that enable Grass Roots football clubs such as Carniny to continue to provide a safe, friendly and professional environment for all local children in and around the Ballymena Borough.

This is the second in a series of four important sponsorship deals that the club have secured in recent weeks. Full details of the remaining two will be announced when finalised.

Meanwhile, four goals from Jonathan Cummings in a deserved 4-2 win for the under 14s in their tie with Ballywalter at Ballymena Showgrounds was the highlight of the weekend for the club sides in action.

UNDER-9

Carniny 0, Coleraine Academy 5: The leaders of the Coleraine League, Coleraine Academy U10s, inflicted the young U9 team the first defeat of the season.

Carniny battled in defence with hard tackling from Lamont, Robinson, Farquhar and Young but they weren't able to keep out the older Coleraine team who have a 100 percent record.

Carniny 1, Dungoyne 2: This was the first meeting between these two teams and it didn't take Dungoyne long before they took the lead.

They struck again on 15 mins to double their lead when they got another free kick similar to their first.

Two minutes, later Carniny pulled one back through Stewart, who has scored in every game so far.

In the second half, the boys in red pounded the Dungoyne box, time after time, but their defence and keeper kept every attack and shot out.

Carniny 0, St Oliver Plunkett 7: Having suffered a number of heavy defeats of late in the National League, Carniny fielded a reshuffled line up on Saturday morning but were in bother as soon as they conceded a goal inside the opening 30 seconds.

The closest Carniny came to scoring was an excellent free kick from McNeill which clipped the top of the bar on its way over but despite the heavy scoreline, Carniny acan take heart from a much improved performance against a team who are without doubt one of the top sides in the country.

Carniny 0, Glendowan 3: The Ballymena 'reds' went down to a big, strong Belfast side with two late goals added to one scored early on.

Carniny 4, Ballywalter 2: A hat-trick from centre forward Cummings gave the Ballymena 'Reds' a little breathing space at half-time.

Cummings' first goal arrived 5mins in, while brilliant ball played through by Nixon set him up for his next strike where he slipped the ball nicely under the bar out of the keeper's reach. The third, just minutes from half time, was a perfect weighted ball from Agnew and again a well struck shot on target.

Ballywalter hit back with two goals making it a tight finish. Then with minutes to go Cummings broke through and made no mistake putting the game beyond reach.

Carniny 1, Portadown 1: After a scoreless first half, Watson opened the scoring after he tapped home from close range following a goal mouth scramble.

It looked like the Ballymena lads would go on to win as they took heart from their goal, but this wasn't the case as Portadown regrouped and levelled with 15 minutes left.

Carniny 3, Maiden City 3: Carniny got off to a great start when five minutes in, Hood controlled a long ball out from Curry in goal and ran it into the box before firing home.

City however got their equaliser on 20mins when their winger cut inside from the right flank and gave Curry no chance and the Derry boys led 2-1 at the break.

An uncleared corner allowed City to tap in at the far post and extend their lead to 3-1 early in the second half.

Carniny broke and Apsley fired home to bring it back to 2-3 with only 10 minutes to go.

Carniny began to press for their equaliser and good combination play down the left from Black, Armstrong and Carson saw Armstrong rifle in a shot that was too much for the keeper to handle and an alert Apsley was on hand to fire in the rebound.
