The boys were flying the flag for Ballymena, being the last local team left in the competition at this stage, but unfortunately the boys lost out to a single second half goal from the team tipped as one of the pre-competition favourites.

The boys put up a brave display on a bitterly cold day up at the Showgrounds but it was the County Tyrone boys who progressed to the semi finals.

at Ballymena Showgrounds for 7pm until 9pm and all FREE of charge.

UNDER-13

Carniny Youth 0, Dungannon United Youth 1: Carniny faced Dungannon on the 3G at Ballymena Showgrounds in the quarter-finals of the NIBFA cup.

This was going to be a tough game for the boys in wintery conditions of snow and strong winds.

Carniny played with the wind in the first half however it was Dungannon who had most of the play in the first 15 minutes.

The game was being mainly played in midfield then after several quick passes Dungannon cut open the Carniny defence but the striker’s shot was superbly saved by Shea O’Brien in the Carniny goal.

This gave Carniny a wake up call and they then started to get into the game and a snap shot by Sean Elliott from the edge of the box just cleared the Dungannon crossbar.

In the second half Carniny tried to get a grip on the game and they were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box within 30 seconds of the restart. Elliott hit the free kick just over the crossbar.

Dungannon started to up their passing game and pressed Carniny all over the pitch. Then in the 35th minute Carniny lost the ball in midfield and the Dungannon striker’s shot hit O’Brien and and fell kindly to the other striker who rammed the ball home.

Dungannon made changes to try and stop Elliott who was causing them all sorts of problems. In the 42nd minute Elliott was tackled and this was the end of his game as he had to leave the field.

Carniny found themselves down to ten men in the closing stages of the game and were forced into making making a few changes a to try and get an equaliser. They gave it everything in the closing minutes but Dungannon created another couple of chances but O’Brien saved well both times.

Carniny: O’Brien, Lemon, Henderson, Laverty, Downey, Crawford, Marshall, McGarry, Stewart, Elliott, McDonnell, Reid, Foster, Leetch, McHenry.
