Cliftonville’s Ciaran Donaghy was snapped up at the weekend, just after another Solitude man, Dermot McVeigh, arrived on loan.

“Ciaran was released by Cliftonville,” Hughes said. “He had been out through injury for a while and would perhaps have struggled to get back into their team, while Dermot is on loan after starting the first four matches of this season in the Reds’ first-team.”

Also putting pen to paper at Taylor’s Avenue is ex-Ards goalkeeper Michael Dougherty and midfielder Ryan McCann, formerly of Crusaders.

Out the door goes Simon Steele to Ards, while Jackson Griffith has gone on loan to Islandmagee.

Carrick host in-form Bangor in the league on Saturday and Hughes knows it’s a massive test for his team.

“They got a great result at Inver Park and we watched them last week,” he said. “They look a formidable unit and will be one of about six teams who have genuine credentials for a top-two league finish.

“I am looking for a reaction from the team after Friday night’s Steel Cup defeat and I expect to get it.

“It will be a much-changed line-up and we will have to match them for hunger, determination and skill. I can tell you that if we are not up for the fight then we will get nothing at Taylor’s Avenue.”
