Carrick show interest in O’Connor

As he prepares to welcome his squad to pre-season training this Saturday, Carrick manager Stephen Small admits he has been talking to Kieran O’Connor who has been released by Cliftonville.

But he has competition for the experienced midfielder’s signature and isn’t sure what the chances are that he will feature regularly at Taylor’s Avenue in the season which is still over six weeks away.

“I have spoken to him and would certainly be interested in signing him, but some other clubs would be equally keen to acquire his services,” explained Small.

“He’s 29 and I played against him quite a few times when he was with Larne and Glenavon and have seen him many times since as well. He’s a good player who is solid in midfield, likes to get forward and scores quite a few goals.

“I want to strengthen the squad a bit more and experienced players would be the target. But we do have some quality midfielders already on the books so it won’t be that big a deal if we don’t get his signature,” added Small.
