Celtic progress thanks to Cummings heroics

Both teams started brightly with half chances for either side but the deadlock wasn’t broken until midway through the half when the hosts took the lead when a back post header found the net.

Celtic then kicked into gear and were level soon after when a fine cross from Mulligan found Shane Devlin at the back post and he made no mistake for the equaliser.

Cookstown continued to dominate and went ahead when Stephen Devlin released Johnston and he slotted home when one-on-one with the keeper.

The hosts had their keeper to thank soon after when he made a terrific save to deny Johnston his second of the game. Celtic thought they had their third when O’Neill fired home but he was adjudged to have handled the ball in the build up.

The hosts came flying out of the blocks in the second half and Celtic had their ‘keeper Cummings to thank as he made several top quality saves to maintain Celtic’s lead. However, he was unable to prevent the hosts’ equaliser when a loose ball in the box was fired home to make it 2-2.

Celtic again responded and were awarded a penalty when good pressure from Johnston forced the defender to handle in the area. Up stepped O’Neill who duly dispatched the kick to restore Celtic’s lead.

This Saturday Cookstown Celtic are back in league action when they entertain Ambassadors at Fairhill at 2.15pm.
