CHAMPIONSHIP TWO: ‘We must learn to finish’ - Taylor

PORTSTEWART grabbed a point when they met Moyola Park at Mill Meadow on Saturday.

It was a dull affair with both sides cancelling each other out.

Joel Maddison pulled off a fine save from Campbell in the 16th minute to keep his side in the tie. Campbell was to be the thorn in Portstewart’s side as he forced Maddison into another save minutes later.

James Peden was forced off due to injury. He was replaced by Che Bradley, and the teenager, who had played for the Reserves in the morning, put in another impressive display

Andy White had an effort cleared by Moyola keeper Lennox, as both sides continued to cancel each other out.

It looked as if Gary Taylor’s side had broke the deadlock in the 41st minute when Tosh headed home, but the referee ruled the goal offside, and the half time score was 0-0.

The second half was much the same as the first with neither side really threatening.

Campbell forced Maddison into a last minute save in the 83rd minute to leave the final score 0-0.

Taylor was a little dismayed by the display: “ We had all the play, but we simply couldn’t find the net.

“I don’t think their keeper had a save to make throughout the whole game. Joel [Maddison] made two or three great saves from Campbell.”

Taylor admitted that his side need to learn to finish: “ We will be working on things this week in training. We put in cross after cross on Saturday, but we just couldn’t finish.”

On the plus side striker James McLaughlin is back following suspension.

Portstewart entertain Chimney Corner this Saturday, and Taylor is hoping for an improved performance. “James Peden got injured on Saturday, but I am hopeful that he’ll be back, Mervyn Nicholl also came through Saturday unscathed on a hard pitch, I just hope we can do better this Saturday,” admitted Taylor.
