Churchill raring to go in cup final

CHURCHILL United defender Sean McCabe sounded an optimistic note going into tonight's (Thursday KO 7pm) Craig Memorial Cup Final against Tobermore United.

The Waterside outfit are enjoying something of a rich vein to form. The match itself has been postponed a number of times.

It was originally due to be played back in December but the severe winter meant it did not go ahead.

Centre-back McCabe said he and his teammates are raring to go.

"The boys are starting to come good again. We have done well in the last couple of games, we beat Mountjoy 2-1 in the intermediate league. We have won the last two and we drew the one before it.

"We really want to go out there and give Tobermore a good game. We have loads of ability in the side and we can't wait to get going."

Churchill's road to the final has been a tricky one, but for the ex-Derry City man he believes they have a good chance against Tobermore.

"It has been a tough season, we have had players missing with injuries and suspensions. But the last couple of weeks have seen players coming back. The lads performed very well in the semi-final against Limavady.

"I definitely feel if we can play the way we know we can play we can give anybody a game."

Their semi-final tie was possibly the most difficult, against high flying Limavady United.

Playing the Championship leaders was a difficult looking tie on paper and it proved so on the pitch. The game finished two-all at full time and three-all at the end of extra time.

The fourth penalty taker for Limavady put his over the bar before Cathal Deery made no mistake to put Churchill into the final.

McCabe has a good deal of faith in his teammates to deliver against Tobermore.

"We have enough talent to match them. We have the talent to play at a higher level. We have Robbie Godfrey, he is someone you could look out for, he might stand out. He could play at a higher level.

"We have Gary Simpson, John Quigg, Paul McColgan, our goalkeeper Dermot Brown has a good experienced head on him. We also have the ex-Institute man Richard Dunlop."

McCabe is aware of the strength of Tobermore: "They are at home so that might be a factor. But it is a cup match, it is the first final for the last couple of years. It would be nice for the like of Bert and Roy Simpson to try and go out and get a win."
