City Cup takes centre stage this weekend

THERE were a number of shocks in the cup games last Saturday; in the quarter-final of the Matt Morrison Junior Cup two First Division sides had excellent results, Tullyally defeated Maghera Reds while City Colts travelled to Portstewart Olympic and booked their place in the last four.

On Friday night Newtowne also reached the last four after a comfortable win over Lincoln Courts, in the other game Roe Rovers lost on penalties to Liverpool Supporters Club.

Caw caused a major surprise in the City Cup defeating Premier Division Side Greysteel thanks to some excellent saves from keeper Christopher Ross.

Claudy Rovers hammered Claudy United while Sion just got the better of Park, Foyle Wanderers had a rare win over Irish Street. Ballykelly were no match for Premiership leaders BBOB while in the other game Dungiven Reserves came out on top at Maghera Strollers.

City Cup

Burndennett v Newtowne

Who can stop the Limavady men, they are going for a clean sweep of trophies and after their easy win over Lincoln Courts in the Junior cup it is going to take a special effort to stop them.

The home side however usually perform reasonably well against them and with home advantage this may be close.

Prediction: Newtowne.

City Colts v Drummond

The Colts are having a marvellous season which looks likely to end with silverware, they have almost wrapped up the First Division title and they are still involved in both cups after taking some big scalps.

Drummond although in the Premier Division will go into this game as underdogs, they have not been playing well and need a result to rescue their season.

Prediction: City Colts.

Newbuildings United Reserves v Roe Rovers

The home side are not always at full strength due to first team commitments and this week may be no different, when they have everybody available they are a useful side.

Rovers were disappointed to bow out of the Junior Cup and they now will concentrate in going all the way in this one, they are certainly good enough.

Prediction: Roe Rovers.

Premier Division

Greysteel v BBOB

The home side suffered a shock exit from the City Cup last week, however they are very much in the title hunt and this game is massive to both clubs.

The Old Boys are the current leaders but have played more games than some of the chasing pack, this one may end all square.

Prediction: Score Draw.

Maghera Strollers v Lincoln Courts

The Strollers season seems to be disintegrating, they are out of everything and are merely fulfilling fixtures, not the Strollers of a few seasons ago.

The Courts simply must keep winning if they are going to maintain their title challenge, how much will their confidence be damaged after last weeks defeat by Newtowne, they should be to strong.

Prediction: Lincoln Courts.

Sion v Foyle Wanderers

Second from bottom versus bottom, the Tyrone men have shown a bit of an improvement in recent games which will give them a glimmer of hope, although they were lucky enough to win last week.
