Clough only team yet to taste defeat in second division

THE competitive nature of Division Two is illustrated by the fact that Clough Rangers are the only unbeaten team after three rounds of fixtures.

The Springmount Road side chalked up their third straight win with a commanding display to win by 17 shots at Dunclug PTA.

The game was still very much in the balance at the interval, by which stage both teams had a point on the board.

Andy Armstrong’s 13-9 win over George Davidson was enough to ensure Clough had their noses in front by two shots, despite Noel Clarke’s 10-8 win for Dunclug over Dennis McClurkin.

Clough found another gear in the second half, however, as firstly Raymond Aitcheson saw off Alan Herron by 13 shots to two and David Shaw completed a good night for the visitors by beating Chris Ramsey.

They are joined on 10 points by Harryville Community Centre, after they whitewashed Services ‘A’, who themselves had claimed full points in their opening match.

Harold Smyth and Wilson Burgess had given Harryville a solid first half footing with wins over Bill Kitson and Davy Balmer.

And Bertie McBride and Stewart Wilson continued in the same vein after the break, with wins against George Beattie and Billy Scullion respectively.

Services ‘B’, after an opening week defeat, got their campaign up and running by taking four points from a narrow six-shot home victory over Maine.

Services shaded the first half with John Smith edging out Patsy O’Neill by nine shots to eight, then Roy Dickson saw off John Heffron by an identical margin.

The decisive twist came in the second half as Eric Smyth’s 13-5 win over Laurence McQuillan gave Services some daylight, meaning that Pat Kerr’s 11-7 win over Greta Coulter wasn’t enough for Maine to overhaul the deficit.

In the remaining game between Moneyglass and JTI, seven ends had been played when Moneyglass received news of the sudden passing of the husband of one of their members.

JTI immediately agreed to an abandonment and rescheduling of the fixture and Moneyglass have thanked their opponents for their consideration and co-operation.
