Clubman of Year Munster set to extend stay at club

It had been suggested that the veteran defender might bring down the curtain on his long Irish League career by retiring at the end of this season.

But, speaking at Saturday night’s function, Ferguson stated that Munster will once again be part of his plans for the new campaign.

“I have known Davy a long, long time and he really wears his heart on his sleeve,” said Ferguson.

“I spoke to him at length last summer and I had to fight to keep him at the club.

“I told him I wanted to keep him, not just for what does for the team but also in the changing room with his attitude and desire - he just loves the game.

“He knows what Irish League football means to him and that is why he is going to be here again next season.

“He will not play as much as he wants but he will mentor the young lads.”

The manager was speaking as he presented a new Clubman of the Year award to Munster, donated by youth team coach Clifford Adams.

Munster himself reflected on the final by admitting: “Every single one of the boys are hurting.

“Losing a cup final is never easy and the boys are distraught.

“Every week I go out and train and play with this group of boys and we all knock our pans in.

“We just didn’t get there in the final but next year we’ll go again.

“We’re certainly moving in the right direction,” added Davy.
