Coagh three points from league survival

Coagh need three points to survive in the Championship One. Four teams sit on the trap door and it’s all to play for.

Limavady, Coagh, Tobermore and Bangor all have only a couple of games left for survival, the Roadsiders (20 points) travel to Dundela this Saturday followed by an away match to Warrenpoint.

Coagh (20 points) travelled to Carrick on Tuesday night, and that defeat will be followed by their most crucial match of the season, a home match against Larne this Saturday.

Tobermore (18 points) travel to Loughgall this week looking for three points that would save their season but they will have to wait to Saturday 4th May before their match away to Bangor.

The seaside club sitting on 17 points are away to Carrick and then home to Tobermore.

Points for all for clubs are in the juggler’s hands and their fate could even be decided by goal difference.

By Saturday, Coagh will know if they will be playing Division One football next season.

Last Saturday’s match is another day Coagh players will want to forget. Coagh got a great start, a penalty after six minutes which James Ferguson despatched. With Marcus Dallas, Scott McCordick and Jason Gillespie all missing Coagh had to re-group with Mattie Kempton, Steven Lamont and David Nicholl coming in and the Coagh side looked like they could get something out of this match early on.

As the match progressed the Welders added spark to their game and levelled through Stephen Garrett. A simple cross from the right was fumbled by Johnny Yorke with Garrett on hand to head home a gift of a goal.

The home side piled on the pressure and from a free kick Aaron Thornton miss-timed his challenge with Paul Muir and Coagh were a goal behind. Wayne Drummond in the Welder’s goal dealt with any threat from the visitors as they held on to their lead at the break.

Coagh were forced to make a further change at the start of the second half after Aaron Thornton limped off. Stephen Glasgow came in but found it hard to settle in Coagh’s changed line up.

The visitors made good progress on the home goal but just failed to find that crucial finish. Man of the Match Paul Muir took his tally to two direct from a free kick.

Coagh’s Captain David Calderwood showed leadership with a forty yard run which ended in Drummond turning out his shot for a corner. Mattie Kempton had a shot on target from a free kick as did Stephen Lamont.

The Welders Steven Garrett hammered in the final rivet in this Coagh’s sinking ship with two fine goals. His first was a thirty yard thunderbolt into the top corner while his hat trick came with six minutes to go.

Saturday will see Coagh finish their season at Hagan Park. This could be Coagh’s last chance for survival in Division One. Kick Off is 3pm and we are hoping to see a bumper crowd at Hagan Park to get behind our local side.
