Coleraine FC v Coleraine RFC - battle lines are drawn

THE battle lines are drawn as Coleraine footballers will be taking on their rugby counterparts in a unique charity match this Friday evening.

Bragging rights are up for grabs when the players of Coleraine Football Club and Coleraine Rugby Club come together for their first ever cross-discipline clash.

The match will involve one half of touch rugby and another half of football with the proceeds from the night going to the Children To Lapland Trust.

The spectacle is being hosted at Coleraine Rugby Club on Friday, July 20, kick-off 7.30pm. The match is being sponsored by Funtime Creations.

The match is being organised by former Coleraine FC assistant boss, Jimmy Calvin who hopes as much money as possible is raised for this most worthy of causes.

Bannsiders boss Oran Kearney will be donning the blue and white shirt himself along with members of his squad on the night.

And members of the Coleraine RFC Firsts will line up on the other side for a night of sporting fun and banter.

Jimmy has also invited along three budding Ulster Rugby stars, Chris Cochrane, Ricky Andrews and Luke Marshall who’ll be helping out the football boys.

Jimmy Calvin said: “This is the first time it’s ever been done in Coleraine so it should be a great night.

“We hope to raise as much money as possible for the charity. There will be a disco in the Rugby Club afterwards.”

Each year the Northern Ireland’s Children To Lapland Trust takes terminally ill, long term ill and deserving children to see Santa at his home in Lapland.

Many of the children endure the burden of illness throughout their entire lives – a lifetime which is sadly too short. The children who travel with the Trust are nominated by their hospitals and doctors, who see for themselves the kids’ excitement grow as their trip of a lifetimes approaches.

BBC Radio Ulster’s Alan Simpson will be the compere and tickets cost £5 which gets you into the game and the disco afterwards. Admission will also be at the gate on the night.

Tickets are available at Coleraine Football Club and Coleraine Rugby Club and other outlets.
