Dungiven U10...3

ON Saturday morning ’Stute under 10s played against Dungiven, who are a strong and well organised side so they knew they had to be at their best to get a result and with a few players missing made it more difficult.

The opening 15 minutes were very tight with no team creating any chances with Curry and Cloete having a good game in defence and Lynch and Bhavsar also playing well.

Then out of nothing Dungiven scored a goal and this seemed to unsettle ’Stute and with Dungiven on top the ’Stute keeper Allen was making some fine saves to keep the score to 1-0.

At half-time Colin McArthur made a change and brought Lea on, this seemed to spur ’Stute on and they were on top of Dungiven but for some good defending by Dungiven who kept the score at 1-0 and then man of the match for ’Stute, Curry, levelled things.

Burnett and McArthur had a chance each to score but were both denied by the Dungiven keeper.

In the last five minutes Dungiven scored another two goals to wrap up the game.

’Stute slipped out of the Cup and into the Shield after losing to a Linfield side who showed just why they are in the top three of the national league with a clinical display at The Dub in Belfast.

The Waterside teenagers started confidently and were retaining the ball but Linfield scored with their first proper attack after 10 minutes. A jinking run won a free kick just outside the box and the resulting effort was parried into the bath of their player who lifted the ball in from close range.

The next few minutes defined the game; Deighan hit a wonderful Free Kick from 30 yards which the Linfield goalkeeper tipped onto the ball and Adam’s follow up was deflected onto the post. Deighan then headed just wide from the resulting corner before Linfield effectively won the game. A soft goal was conceded from their corner in the very next attack and Linfield tripled their tally immediately as the ball was loosely given away from kick off and Linfield latched on to it and scored.

’Stute were markedly better in the second half, competing well, clearly irritated by a score which did not reflect the first half. It stayed at 3-0 until five minutes from the end when a tired ’Stute team, weakened by injuries during the half, conceded three more soft goals in the remaining minutes.

The Drumahoe side get the chance to face Linfield again in the coming weeks in the last league game of the season and can hopefully get a run going in the Shield to see out the season.
