Comeback kings Broughshane seal semi-final place

FIRST Broughshane staged a stunning second half comeback to book a place in the smei-finals of the Nelson Cup last week.

It had looked bleak for the villagers as they trailed by 24 shots to 13 on their own mats at the interval of their quarter-final clash with Killymurris Carnlea.

That lead had been built on the efforts of Joe Campbell's rink, who restricted Robert Neeson to just one scoring end – on which the home side notched a '4' – in an 18-4 success.

George Davidson had at least repaired some of the damage for First Broughshane with a 9-6 win over Trevor McAlonan, but lengthy odds would still have been laid on the home side progressing to the last four.

But that's exactly what they did as firstly David Calderwood's rink chipped three more shots off the arrears with a 9-6 win over David Kernohan, deputising for the unavailable Danny McCullough.

But James Gaston's rink were the real heroes for Broughshane with a 16-4 win over an out-of-sorts Isle Compton to give the home side overall victory by four shots.

First Broughshane were also in league action, breaking into the top six by taking three-and-a-half points from their short trip across the village to St Patrick's.

Elsewhere, Cloughwater's fading hopes of finishing in runners-up spot behind champions-elect Killymurris Glarryford suffered a major setback when they took just a single point from their trip to Ballymena Methodist.
