Council awards

THE prestigious Hughes Insurance Derry District Sports Council Awards 2010 takes place this Friday night, in the City Hotel.

This year there will be a total of 20 Awards to be contested for and the Award Categories cover male and female competitors, Individuals and teams and range across youth, juvenile, senior and master age groups.

For schools there is both a Primary School Team Award and a Post Primary School Team Award. Also catered for are those individuals who remain firmly in the shadows but without who sport could not exist.

The award categories for ‘Sports Coach Award’ and ‘Services to Sport Award’ have in the past been two of the most eagerly contested awards and it is anticipated that this year will be no different.

Watt Nicoll, will be the guest speaker at the awards ceremony this Friday evening, the motivational speaker has worked with the likes of England footballing superstars David Beckham and Wayne Rooney, as well as Everton manager David Moyles and recently appointed Wales gaffer Chris Coleman.

The Mayor Alderman Maurice Devenney, giving his backing to the awards, said it was important that local sports persons are recognised and their achievements celebrated. “I fully support the work done by the District Sports Council to promote sport and encourage people to engage in a healthy lifestyle.

“The annual sports awards are an important event in the local sports calendar and I wish them every success.”
