Cowie header seals win over Larne

A last-minute goal from former Larne player Scott Cowie gave Amateur League outfit Wellington Rec a 2-1 win in a hard-fought local derby against Larne at Brookvale Park on Thursday evening.

The home side opened the scoring after only seven minutes. A slip by Reece Moore was pounced on by Josh McAllister who calmly fired the ball past David Henry. Four minutes later, a Gary Workman free-kick brought a fine save from Aaron Kerr to deny him the equaliser.

Wellington Rec should have doubled their lead when a pass from Daryll Kernohan released Zak McAllister who saw his shot tipped over the bar.

Larne were back on level terms after nineteen minutes. A Craig Todd cross from the right was met by Paul Maguire who powered his header into the net.

Maguire was denied a second nine minutes later when he got on the end of another Todd cross but a goal-line clearance from Cowie kept the score level.

Midway through the second-half Kieran Kane got in behind the home defence only to see his shot strike the upright.

Josh McAllister then wasted an even better chance on 71 minutes when, with only the keeper to beat, he steered his shot wide.

The next chance fell to the visitors when Arron Lemon broke clear but he also failed to hit the target from 10 yards out.

As the game moved into added time, McAllister delivered a corner from the left to find Cowie rising highest in the box to power his header into the net.
