Cullen signs for Harps

GOALKEEPER Gavin Cullen admitted that the chance to return to Finn Harps was one of the reasons why he left Institute.

The big net-minder, who could have earned more money by either signing for Coleraine or Dungannon Swifts, decided to re-join the Donegal men, but also declared that he didn't want to play Championship football with the Drumahoe.

"Harps were looking for me ever since I was available from 'Stute but I couldn't finalise anything until the transfer window opened on July 1," explained Cullen.

"I had a choice of either Coleraine, 'Stute, Dungannon or Harps but I wanted to play for Harps. Financially it would have been better for me if I had moved to Coleraine or Dungannon but I wanted to come back to play for Harps.

"I've always wanted Harps to do well and I always looked out for their results."

The 29-year-old also explained that if the Waterside men had have avoided relegation he may have decided to remain at the Riverside Stadium.

"I could have stayed at 'Stute because they offered me a contract but I didn't want to play at Championship level. I had a good year at 'Stute and won the 'Player of the Year' award and I enjoyed it there but it wasn't my ambition to play at that level."
