Defeat for Wakehurst at Lurgan

WAKEHURST missed the opportunity to climb further away from the foot of the IFA Championship Two table on Saturday when they were beaten 2-1 at fellow strugglers Lurgan Celtic.

Against the run of play Wakehurst opened the scoring in the 20th minute. Lurgan Celtic failed to clear their lines from a corner. Owen Gregg lofted a ball back into the box, which Steven McIlroy latched onto and finished calmly.

There were few chances for either side until the equaliser in the 39th minute. A Wakehurst pass deflected right into the path of Raymond Fitzpatrick who smashed home to level the game.

In the second half, 25 minutes in, the home side took the lead as a goal kick came straight back allowing Andrew Murnin the space the breakthrough and poke the winner home.

On 82 minutes Lurgan Celtic could have secured the win as an unclaimed cross was headed goal bound but cleared off the line by David Gibson.

Meanwhile, Wakehurst’s hugely-popular annual table quiz will be held this year on Thursday, April 8, at Tullyglass House Hotel (9pm).
