Depleted Wakehurst pleased with away point

WAKEHURST claimed another point towards climbing away from the foot of IFA Championship Two with a 1-1 draw at Portstewart on Saturday.

Ian Gregg’s men travelled to Seahaven with a depleted squad due to suspensions and injuries and were happy to secure a point away.

Eight minutes into the game a loose defensive pass let Ryan Gregg in on goal but his first time effort went behind for a corner.

Although, two minutes later Wakehurst scored as Portstewart failed to deal with a corner. Their clearance came back off their own player and fell to Darren Parker who slotted home the opener.

Portstewart had a chance to set the game level on 22 minutes as Bryan Tosh, through on goal, should have scored. However, he was stopped by Wakehurst ‘keeper Joe McErlean.

As the first half looked to be fizzling out a Wakehurst cross was met by David Gibson, and only an excellent stop by Hugh McAllister denied the defender.

The second half told a different story as Portstewart came out fighting. They got their reward when a goalmouth scramble allowed Mervyn Nicholl to snatch the equaliser in the 60th minute.

The away side ultimately held on to seize the point. Wakehurst can take heart in their performance, which will stand them in good stead for a tough encounter at home against HW Welders tonight (Tuesday).
