Derby delight for Portstewart as they start the season with a win

A 2-1 win put the seasiders on top of the league table for a few hours on Friday night, much to the delight of boss Gary Taylor.

“We were delighted with the win and with the performance we put in.

“We gave away a bad penalty in the first few minutes, and that put the boys off, but we battled hard, and to be fair we deserved the win,” told Taylor.

The home side took the lead from the spot after just ten minutes, David McVicker hit home from the spot, after he was up-ended in the box.

After that Portstewart battled hard, but the Glebe defence was hard to break down. Eight minutes before the break former Glebe striker Ricky Dunlop headed home after a great cross from Nigel Turner.

The second half saw a strong Portstewart searching out a winner. Chances from Ryan McAllister, Owen Moody and Ricky Dunlop came to nothing.

The visitors got their reward in the 89th minute when Owen Moody wrong footed Kane in the Glebe goal to seal the win.

“It’s good to get three points on the board,” said Taylor. “ We now face a tough away test against Larne (Tuesday) in the League Cup before we play Tobermore on Saturday. The league is our priority, but we’ll give the Cup game our best shot. John Neill and Johnny Gawn will both be available for the Tobermore tie. They’ve had a change in management, so I don’t really know what we’ll be up against.”

The game at Sea Haven has a 3pm kick off.
