Derriaghy edge past Wellington Rec

Wellington Rec were just three minutes away from the unpredictability of a penalty shootout, before a last-gasp strike edged 1A leaders Derriaghy Cricket Club through to the next round with this 2-1 Clarence Cup victory at Seycon Park.

The Cricketers had first strike on 11 minutes when a forward beat keeper Brendan Quinn to a searching cross.

Derriaghy generally had the better of things up against an understrength Wellington, but rarely looked like adding to that lead; some shots from distance being comfortably dealt with by keeper Quinn.

The second session was more of the same and the tie looked to be petering out for a 1-0 until Jamie Beggs snatched an equaliser 10 minutes from time when he stole in to nod home Gareth Hastings’ pin-point cross.

And so into extra-time, where it was looking increasingly like penalties, until Derriaghy grabbed that late winner just three minutes from the end of the second period; first to react to the loose ball after the initial shot had been pawed out by Quinn.

Wellington Rec: Quinn – Todd, Dunkley, Cahoon, Mundell – Monaghan, McDonald (Christie), Mulvenna (Humphrys), Beggs, Hastings – Burns.

Elsewhere, Islandmagee crashed out of the Clarence Cup, suffering a 3-1 defeat away to 2C side St Teresa’s YC.

The Islanders’ next game is a Premier League trip to Killyleagh YC. Earlier in the season Killyleagh bagged a 3-2 win at Wilbourne Park.
