Derry City players open Foyle FootGolf course

Derry City were invited to play the first round at Foyle Golf Centre’s new FootGolf course this afternoon and it proved very popular with the players.

With the game coming up at Longford Town on Saturday, Shane McEleney, Dean Jarvis, Seanan Clucas and Ryan Curran only played one hole before walking around the course and they are already planning a players day at the new course.

Malcolm Allan from FootGolf NI explained to us, “It’s the fastest growing sport in the UK. There are around 80 courses already set up around the UK and there’ll be more very soon, and Foyle Golf Centre will be the first course in Northern Ireland to open it’s doors to the public tomorrow morning. We have another coming along soon in Newcastle Co.Down, and then hopefully one in Belfast as well.”

“The idea of the game is quite simple. Most of the same rules and etiquette of golf apply. You tee off at the start and kick the ball towards the flag, which have holes that are 21 inches in diameter to accommodate the size of the football. The scorecards will show you what par the holes are, and you work from there.”

Pat Stranney, the Northern Ireland Development Manager for FootGolf NI also explained: “Our target would be to eventually have one in each of the counties and hopefully we can get a competition where people from all over Northern Ireland can compete locally and go on from there.”

Rob Gallagher from Foyle Golf Centre explain the pricing; “Weekdays will be £6 for adults, Under-18’s £5; Weekends are Adults £7, Under-18’s £6. You can use your own football, or you can hire one for £1.”″
