Derry retain Billy Kee Memorial Cup

Played in bitterly cold conditions, the Brandywell men had to come from behind to win the cup, after Sean Roddy had given ’Stute the lead early on.

A defensive mistake by Matt Crossan on ten minutes saw his weak header back to Gerard Doherty fall well short and Roddy nipped in and lobbed the out-rushing City keeper.

The visitors had a lot of chances in the first half with Patrick McEleney, Rory Patterson and Davy McDaid all going close, while ’Stute keeper Martin Gallagher also made a host of top draw saves in the opening 45 minutes.

Then right on the stroke of half-time Doherty had to come to his side’s rescue, making a smart save to keep out Dean Jarvis’ left footed volley.

Declan Devine’s side did level things in somewhat fortunate circumstances when Eddie McCallion’s centre was parried into his own net by the unfortunate Gallagher.

The Candy Stripes netted the winner on 74 minutes when Stephen McLaughlin’s left wing centre found McDaid at the back post and he slotted the ball past Gallagher.
