Disability football club makes a welcome return

Coleraine Borough Council is delighted to announce the Coleraine Strikers Disability Football Club will shortly recommence for their third season.

This joint partner initiative, delivered by Coleraine Borough Council, the Irish Football Association and the University of Ulster, aims to encourage boys and girls with learning and/or physical disability to learn the game of football, whilst developing important team building and coordination skills.

The weekly coaching programme will begin on Wednesday 12 September at the University of Ulster’s Main Sports Hall. Participants will be divided into two age categories; the ‘junior’ section, aged 7 – 14 years old, will train from 6pm – 7pm whilst the ‘senior’ session, age group, 15 years and above, will be held from 7pm- 8pm.

Stephen McCartney, Community Sports Development Officer for Coleraine Borough Council said: “The Disability Football Club was hugely successful last season and we are really looking forward to welcoming back familiar faces from last season but are also eager to encourage new participants to come along and give it a go.

“All sessions are open to both boys and girls with a learning and/ or physically disability, regardless of their football experience or skill. Our sessions are led by experienced coaches who make learning the game of football fun.

“Each training session will aim to encourage skill progression and team play through small sided games and various training activities. Regardless of your sporting experience you will be made to feel most welcome and have the opportunity to learn new skills and make new friends.”

All sessions are supervised by IFA accredited coaches. Cost per session is £2.
