Distillery run out of steam in uphill battle after the Whites see red

After going down to 10 men just 11 minutes into last week’s game against the league leaders, perhaps Distillery couldn’t have expected anything other than defeat.

And that’s what they got as Harland and Wolff Welders ran out 2-0 winners at New Grosvenor thanks to two second half goals after Jordan Morrison was dismissed for a rash, two footed challenge.

Gary Smyth’s Welders side were a whisker away from going ahead on 20 minutes as Chris Middleton got on the end of a wonderfully whipped in cross from Sammy Devine but he could only direct his header over the bar.

The Whites were giving as good as they got as they themselves were nearly celebrating when great play by Denver Taggart saw him get in one on one, his shot well saved by Dougherty in the Welders goal. The ball, however, fell to Martin Jones at the back post with virtually an open net to aim at but he smashed wide.

Distillery fans were encouraged by what they had witnessed in the first half and Niall Derry nearly sent them into raptures as his shot was deflected just wide, a whisker away from putting Distillery into the lead.

Gary Smyth’s side started to take control of the game in the second half and, just when it looked like the ten men could battle against the odds to take something from the game, Distillery’s luck ran out with 20 minutes to play.

David Rainey, who loves to score goals against the Whites, did it yet again as he got on the end of a superb cross to head home to send the Welders support into hysterics.

This was followed up by a second Welders goal as Rainey again smashed the ball into the roof of the net after the Whites failed to clear their lines.

These two goals seemed to make Distillery’s heads drop with Cahoon nearly putting Smyth’s side three ahead when he dropped his shoulder beating Lee Chapman before cracking his shot wide.

The game drew to a close but not before Jimmy McIlhagga had a great chance to score as his shot cracked off the crossbar after neat play by Mikey Withers.

A positive but ultimately pointless display then from Distillery after the early red card as they kept battling. If they continue to do that, surely their points haul will soon grow - next up a trip to Bangor in two weeks.
