Doherty goal not enough for Seasiders at Newington YC

‘A game of two halves’ - that’s how Portstewart Assistant Manager, Aaron Forgrave described Saturday’s tie with Newington.

Portstewart came out with all guns blazing to open the tie and played some good football.

Ryan Doherty broke the deadlock in the twentieth minute to put the visitors in front.

Defensively Portstewart held out well and dealt easily with any Newington attacks. As the first half came to a close, the home side grabbed an equaliser in added time to leave the score 1-1 at the break.

Newington were the better side in the second half and pushed in search of a goal. Their efforts were rewarded in added time again when they hit the sucker punch to take the points. Ports defender Neill had a header cleared off the line as the final whistle blew.

Portstewart entertain Tobermore this Saturday in the NW Senior Cup: “We’re expecting a tough tie,” admitted Forgrave. “We have Tobermore twice in the next two weeks, first in the Cup then in the League. Both sides will be looking to progress in this Cup, so there’s no doubt it will be a typical derby encounter. Of course we signed David McClements from Tobermore this season, David has been doing well and I know he will be wanting to prove himself against his old team. We have quiet a few derby games this year - ourselves, Limavady, Tobermore, Glebe and Ballymoney are all in the same league, no one likes to loose points against neighbouring teams. It will be an interesting season,” said the Assistant.
