The former Cliftonville centre-back boosted manager Michael Hughes’ defensive options when signed for the Taylor’s Avenue outfit last Friday, arriving hot on the heels of Reds’ loanee, Dermot McVeigh.

“I have trained with the lads this week and I’m just looking forward to getting started,” the 31-year-old told the Times.

“When I spoke with Colin (Telford) and Michael they said there are four or five teams who are going to be competing at the top end of the table and Bangor were mentioned.

“They have strengthened quite well and I know some of the boys down there. They have good players. It’s not going to be easy, but if we are going to be challenging we have to beat these teams.”

Carrick go into Saturday’s match aiming to bounce back from a drab 0-0 draw with Donegal Celtic and the hugely disappointing 1-0 Steel Cup defeat to Crusaders Reserves.

“For the last two games I know Michael hasn’t been happy with the performances and the results,” added Donaghy.

“It’s important we pick up three points against teams we think are going to be up there with us. Personally, it would be nice to get off to a good start and get the three points on board.”
