Dooey's extra special for Dunloy, as Celtic win Division Two

STEPHEN Dooey hit an extra-time winner as Dunloy Athletic gained partial redemption for not winning the clickni.co.uk Saturday Morning League title by landing the Clough Glasgow Rangers Supporters' Club-sponsored Sammy Moore Trophy, beating Westend Athletic 2-1 in the final.

And there was also silverware joy for Broadway Celtic, whose 2-2 draw at title rivals Connor FC ensured the Division Two championship for the Ballymena club.

SAMMY MOORE TROPHY

Dunloy Athletic 2, Westend Athletic 1 (aet): Both sides looked a little edgy early on with Dunloy coming to closest to scoring when a long range effort from Chris Smiley cannoned back off the crossbar.

Westend opened the scoring in a dull first half six minutes before the break when Alan Quigley won a tackle on the edge of the Dunloy box and the ball fell to David Currie who made no mistake in firing past Chris Brogan in the Dunloy goal.

Dunloy took the game to Westend in the second half and got their just rewards on the hour mark when they drew level. Barry McGonigle played the ball into Chris Smiley who laid the ball off to Steven Dooey who curled the ball past Stevie Greer in the Westend goal from 18 yards out.

Both keepers were then called into action in the final ten minutes with Chris Brogan saving from David Currie and then Stevie Greer denied Steven Dooey a last gasp winner as the game went into extra time.

Extra time was only three minutes old when Dunloy struck. Steven Dooey played a one two with Chris Smiley before racing clear and slotting the ball home.

The McAuley Family sponsored Second Division Cup takes place this Wednesday 19th May at Ballymena Showgrounds with a 7pm KO and features Division Two Runners Up Connor FC and St Comgalls from Larne.

Connor lost out on Saturday when they drew with Broadway Celtic to lose the League by one point having only lost 2 League games all season one of them at St Comgalls so they will be looking for revenge and some silverware to finish off their season.

Connor were promoted this season and with the amalgamation of Connor Rangers and Connor FC under Manager Hugh Campbell they have proven to be a very good team.

They have great talent throughout the team with Alan Norton a strength in defence but their main man is midfielder Darren Campbell who was the main reason they are in this Final for they trailed 1-0 to Shore Wanderers with 10 minutes left and he scored a brilliant goal and set up the winner late on. Darren is well supported by Ricky Hanna and Mervyn Crawford who all combine to create chances for prolific goal scorer Mark Marriott who has been hammering in the goals all season.

St Comgalls were promoted this season having won Division Three and Sammy Moore Trophy last season and have consolidated this with a place in the Play Offs this season.

Their strength is their team play starting at the back with centre backs Paul Smyth and Mark Stevens while Captain Gary McCorry in midfield is the driving force behind their success. Their main goal threat comes from Davis Ferguson who finds the net on a regular basis.

BSML DIVISION TWO

Connor FC 2, Broadway Celtic 2: This was the game that everyone had been waiting on in the Second Division and it didn’t disappoint as Celtic drew for the first time this year and got the point they need to clinch the Second Division Title.

Celtic opened brightly and took the lead after just six minutes when Brian Maybin flicked a long ball on to Gareth Gordon who in turn slipped in Stephen Sexton to hammer home from 18 yards out.

Three minutes later Connor hit back when Darren Campbell laid a free kick to Mark Marriott and he hammered home from 20 yards out.

The game swung from end to end now as both sides looked to gain the upper hand and it was Connor who did so on the half hour mark when Mark Marriott swung over a free kick which deceived everyone and found the corner of the net to make it 2-1 and in doing so scoring his ninth goal against Celtic this season.

Connor controlled the game after the break with Ricky Hanna a constant threat and he almost made it 3-1 when his header hit the bar, but Celtic dug in and drew level on 64 minutes when Brian Maybin crossed into the Connor box and Gareth Gordon bundled the ball over the line to make it 2-2.

Four minutes later Connor were given a chance to take the lead once more when Mark Marriott was pulled down in the Celtic box and a penalty was awarded. Marriott stepped up but fired his spot kick against the post and the danger was cleared.

Celtic were dealt a major blow with 20 minutes to go when they were reduced to ten men, but they re grouped and had done enough to earn the point they needed to seal the Division two title.

Dessie Cooper of ClickNI.co.uk handed over the Division Two Cup to Broadway Celtic’s captain Donald Crawford and the champagne was opened to start the celebrations.

BSML DIVISION ONE

Carniny Rangers 1, Harryville Homers 1: This was a must win game for Homers if they were to stop Carniny Rangers win their fourth Division One Title in a row but although they hit back after going behind and could not get the three points they coveted.

The game itself was a scrappy affair early on with both sides cancelling each other out, until Carniny struck on the half hour mark. Roger Jones drove at the Homers defence down the right before hitting a cross come shot was knocked home at the back post by the predatory Chris Dowie.

Homers struck back before the break though when they caught Carniny on the break. A Carniny corner was cleared by John McDowell to Gary Baird who carried the ball a full 70 yards before slipping the ball to Jason Stevenson whose scuffed effort found the corner of the net.

Homers were reduced to ten men late on but this didn’t help Carniny too much as the game petered out to a draw which all but hands the league title to Carniny.

RAINEY CUP, ROUND THREE

Broadway Celtic 2, Ahoghill Rovers 3: A Johnny Richmond goal two minutes from time saw Rovers clinch a spot in the last eight at the expense of Broadway Celtic.

Rovers got off to a great start after only five minutes when a corner kick from Dale Gordon was only half cleared to Aaron Kirk who found the net with a thunderbolt effort from the edge of the box.

The second half saw Celtic take the game to Rovers but it was Ahoghill who hit the next goal on 70 minutes. A long ball out of defence by Ryan Morrow was misjudged by the Celtic defence and Johnny McKeown nipped in to head the ball over Stephen Elliot in the Celtic goal.

Two minutes later Celtic were giving a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty kick for handball, but Darren Burgoyne saw his spot kick well saved by Andrew French in the Rovers goal.

Celtic did get a goal back with 15 minutes to go when David Fusco cross was turned into his own net by a Rovers defender and then three minutes later Celtic drew level when a Stephen Sexton shot was parried by Andrew French to Donald Crawford who placed the ball into the empty net.

Then just as the game looked destined for extra time Rovers struck when a poor clearance by Celtic found Phil Cromie and he slipped the ball to Johnny Richmond to fire his side into the last eight from 10 yards out.
